The History of the Humble Flip Flop

Flip flops! These simple, rubbery sandals have been around for ages and have a long and interesting history. So, kick off your shoes (or flip flops) and settle in as we take a trip down memory lane.

The flip flop, or thong sandal as it's sometimes called, has been around for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians wore a version of flip flops made from papyrus and palm leaves, and they were also worn by the ancient Greeks and Romans. These early versions of flip flops were simple and functional, designed for walking on hot sand and rugged terrain.

Fast forward to the 1950s, and the flip flop as we know it today was born. This is when rubber manufacturers began producing the flip flop in large quantities, making them more affordable and accessible to the masses. They quickly became popular with beachgoers and surfers in California, who appreciated their easy-to-wear, slip-on design and waterproof construction.

In the 1960s, flip flops became a symbol of the counterculture movement. Young people embraced the laid-back, casual style of the sandals, and they became a popular choice for wearing with jeans, shorts, and tie-dye shirts. The popularity of flip flops continued to grow throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and they were soon embraced by people of all ages and walks of life.

Today, flip flops are a ubiquitous part of summer fashion. They come in a wide range of colours, patterns, and styles, from simple rubber sandals to high-end designer versions made from leather and adorned with jewels. Some people even wear flip flops year-round, pairing them with socks for a cozy and comfortable look (although at Worzl we don't think the socks and flips flops look works under any circumstances, but that's just us...).

Despite their popularity, flip flops are not without controversy. Plastic flip flops are cheap and cheerful but cause untold damage to the oceans.  Some podiatrists argue that they are bad for your feet, as they offer little support and can cause foot and ankle problems over time. Others argue that flip flops are perfectly fine for short periods of wear and that they offer a comfortable and easy-to-wear option for hot summer days.

Love them or hate them, there's no denying that flip flops have a long and interesting history. From their humble beginnings as simple sandals worn by ancient civilizations to their status as a summer fashion staple, by eco conscious people, flip flops have come a long way. So, the next time you slip on a pair of Worzls, take a moment to appreciate their history and the role they've played in our culture.
